The 2020 Emmy’s Through the Lens of Twitter

Everyone across the globe has experienced how 2020 has turned in-person events into virtual ones—even in Hollywood. The Emmy’s, an American television awards show, are typically held in New York City at a large venue. This year, Jimmy Kimmel hosted them at an empty Staples Center in downtown Los Angeles—and I live tweeted the whole thing.

What did I do?

I live tweeted the Emmy’s on September 20th, 2020. In my live tweets I used…

Have you ever seen so much twitter lingo in one list?

What did I learn?

Since I am not an avid twitter user, or really a twitter user at all, I learned a lot in this 3-hour long endeavor. Yes, 3 hours. Who knew the Emmy’s lasted 3 hours!? In addition to learning that the Emmy’s were longer than I expected, I learned how live tweeting requires you to think on your toes. While 25 tweets over the course of 3 hours might not seem like many, when you are trying to think of something creative yet funny in the moment, it takes a lot of brain power! You have to learn to balance between watching the show and staying updated with what’s on twitter—it even makes you appreciate commercial breaks!

How will I use it in the future?

Live tweeting is in league all on its own. While I don’t know if I plan to live tweet in the future, I do think that it taught me something about how to think creatively quickly. I like to sit with ideas and perfect them, but sometimes this keeps me from acting on them. With live tweeting you have to think of an idea, make it clear and concise and witty, post it immediately, and then do it about 20 more times. Why this is not my ideal way to work, it was still super valuable to me and something I plan on doing to formulate and act on ideas in the future.
