Eighteen

On August 22, 2017, I turned 18 years old. Only a few days ago. My eighteenth birthday wasn’t anything crazy. I didn’t go skydiving or buy a pack of cigarettes or get a tattoo (not from a lack of trying…that’s still in the works). Instead, it was a day of rest, reflection, and relaxation. I spent it at my favorite place in the whole world with my parents, and it was glorious. It was what the Lord knew I needed. And my favorite part of the entire day didn’t come until the end. My parents took me out to eat at my favorite restaurant in our favorite little vacation town, and they each had hand-written me a card. Here’s what they said.

“Dear Ellie,

Happy 18th birthday! I am in awe of the beautiful and special young lady you have become. You have a big heart, strong faith, the big brains and determination to do whatever you choose.

Always believe in yourself and remain focused on your dreams. You are a sparkly and rare gem! I love you so much! And I can’t believe you are 18!

Love you, Mom”

“At 11:59 tonight, 18 years ago, Eleanor and I watched Mom give birth to you. One of the best days of my life, and I have had so many more because of you. You are such a special person, really and angel from heaven, sent to bless everyone that gets to spend time with you. Saying I am proud of you does do your growth as a person justice.

Thank you for being who you are so far, and I can’t wait to see how far you go. Just always remember that Dad has your back.

Love, Dad”

I’m not where I expected I would be when I turned 18. There are many things I have yet to do. Younger me thought I would have a book written by now. Younger me thought I would have a boyfriend by now. Younger me thought I’d have it all figured out by now. Not even close. A book is still the dream, but I’m not quite there. A boyfriend is no longer the dream; more like marriage if that’s God’s dream too. And to younger me’s much surprise, I’ve never had a boyfriend or had my first kiss or even been asked out on a date. And just because I’ve turned 18 doesn’t mean I’ve got things figured out. I haven’t even got my math homework figured out if I’m being completely honest. But I’m learning not to worry about the little things. Actually, I’m learning not to worry about the big things either. The Lord’s plan will always prevail. It has for the past 18 years, and it will from now into eternity.
